Processing fish solids in small aquarium aquaponics

Started by David Palmer. Last reply by John Cubit Nov 14, 2012. 5 Replies

I've been doing a lot of reading on aquaponics, though most of what I can find is about much larger operations. I'm wondering if some of the same problems apply to smaller aquariums and how people…Continue

I haven't been on for awhile as my MonSter had been acting up horribly. I have a kiddie pool in the back yard (in a rental) that has some gold fish in it. I originally got it to put some water lilly…Continue

Started by Killian Griffin. Last reply by WaterFish22 Nov 8, 2012. 2 Replies

Just discovered ich on several of my goldfish. How should I go about treating the parasite in an aquaponics system? If I use the typical ich medication, will the plants suffer? I will probably end up…Continue

I'm thinking of using goldfish in my aquaponics system.  For those of you who have chosen to use goldfish, how has your experience been?  Why did you choose goldfish?  Are you glad you chose that…Continue

Hello, can anyone here please tell me how many goldfish I should have in a 50 gallon tank (no sump). I ask because sometimes i get the feeling the plants aren't getting enough food. As of this moment I'd say I have 50 goldfish.. all of the pH readings, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate readings are fine. I feed the fish once a day and always have the impression I give them more food than they need because they'll eat quickly and then leave food floating on the surface.

I ended up killing one of my 5 year old gold fish today, because it had what I believed to be Mitraspora since it was totally bloated up and didn't seam to have swim bladder disorder. The fish also had fin and tail rot. When I tried to move it inside for the winter it got white cotton like fungus on both sides of it's body. I didn't want to kill it but, I couldn't stand it any more since it's condition just seamed to get worse and worse. Despite the fact it was still eating.  I guess if I didn't move it would have died in the pond anyway. I hate Euthanizing my pets even if they are just goldfish.

I use little goldfish in our micro systems.  We went to the store to pick up some normal goldfish the other day and my daughter insisted on rescuing some of the smaller ones that are sold as food for larger fish.  I am now the owner of 25 24 23 tiny little things.  They are fun though, and like others have reported, they love the flowing water from the siphon.

Feed other goldfish in a different system once a day as most others here seem to do.

Forgot to mention its cold here, my fish are in an unheated greenhouse in Colorado. Water temp is low to mid 50's now so they don't eat much.  Of course they are goldfish, so they think they are starving.

im using a sinking goldfish specific fry pellet as i like to hand feed mine. i do have intermediate floater pellet but sorta worry about the air gulping thing. , i have noticed my tank is losing all its green algae coating now too.

gb's are growing well w/ beans doing a couple of inches per shift but im also feeding 3 times per day , covered the f/t and added my g/h shade cloth already. have not had well sighted person over lately to read any water test but everything seems good. fish are growing way fast too

i love these goldfish. blaze orange puppys! hahaha

I too am feeding my goldies once a day.  I am feeding a commercial feed. Not goldfish food, this stuff is designed to keep the good stuff out of the water. Currently feeding the Premium intermediate pellet, ( Like what Sylvia sells.)

I honestly only feed mine once a day - twice if I need to get something from the greenhouse for dinner.  Probably should feed more to get the nutrient levels up, but they all seem fine...

I think my Shubunkin are so happy cause they have a large ball of floating Anacharis to sleep in, but mostly because they are not on the menu.
