I had this bucket with holes in the bottom from a bucket worm composter I had back in the day. I wanted to figure out a way to use it in an aquaponic system. I was thinking about communicating vessels. According to wikipedia: 'Communicating vessels is a name given to a set of containers containing a homogeneous fluid: when the liquid settles, it balances out to the same level in all of the containers regardless of the shape and volume of the containers."

I figured if I put the 5 gallon bucket inside a larger vessel (1/2 of a 55 gallon drum), then pumped water out of the outer vessel into the inner vessel, the water levels would equalize via the holes in the bottom of the inner bucket.  IT WORKED! basically the contents of the bottom of the fish tank (5 gal bucket) get sucked through the holes and into the media bed.

This is prototype 1
