Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I have been cycling for about two weeks. For some reason the pH level is at 6.0 every morning. I have the AquaUp pH Raising Kit, and am adding between 1/2 - 1 teaspoon every day. I test again, and the pH level will increase to 7.6, but by morning it's back to 6.0. Is it normal for the pH to drop every day?

Check out these videos http://community.theaquaponicsource.com/video/aquaponics-ph-part-1. There's a series of 5 on pH.

Also check Bright Agrotech videos. There's all the info you need to get you going with pH and other aspects of aquaponics.

Sylvia likes bicarbonates for pH control and Nate likes hydroxides. Both work but I find in smaller systems the bicarbonates are more stable. Hydroxides make for quicker adjustments and work well in larger systems.

Nitrification will drop PH but that shouldn't be happening in a system that isn't cycled.  Possibly someone will chime in with the answer.  Otherwise, keep reading.  Maybe a KH issue.  I use potassium bicarb and calcium hydroxide 50/50 to raise PH,  Good luck.

If you're testing right after adding your pH raising solution, I'd recommend waiting longer. It sometimes can take a day for everything to settle and balance out.

I also recommend looking into some potassium bicarbonate. (Sylvia's pH Buffering kit should have some in it). It'll raise your KH (carbonate hardness) and neutralize acids before they affect your pH.
