G Mo, Are you just doing DWC? if so you need a true biofilter in there with floaters and sinkers filtration as either one getting to your roots will rot them right off. This is why we suggest not going DWC as a starter system. Way too complicated starting out. I waited 2 yrs before jumping into DWC. Well after taming 5 media beds and 5 IBC FTs. I have a below grade sump which catches all the water from the media beds which are my bio-filters. That clear sump water is perfect for the new DWC bed but if you need a solids/bio-filter ck out mine for starters HERE

I've tried 'building' a variety of filters but the plant roots in my dwc trough are still collecting solids.  Any ideas where i could purchase a swirl filter or clarifier to help with this problem?  Other suggestions?

Cool, thanks for the info, I'll definitely look into picking some up!  Oh, since I'm here I wanted to show off my new toy: Wifi fish tank temperature reader.  Let me know what you think?

Hi Matt. Jason beat me to the punch. The Aquaponics store has a complete chemical analysis. It is low in Nitrogen as the fish supply that. I like the fact that it is very convenient and they've done all the research so I know it is safe. I can't say enough about the Aquaponics Store. Brent was awesome. I'll try to keep you posted on my results. My plants were pretty sad so it'll take awhile. My plants presently in my media beds are stringbeans. I've been eating them for a couple of months now. I've got Habanero and Banana peppers on the plant. I'm eating lettuce (Arugula and Mesclun). I tried Spinach and it grew quick but bolted very small. I've got 2 Cherry toms that are loaded with blossoms. I'll be trying Swiss Chard soon. Take care.

Hey Jack, can you give us some more info on those teabags?  do they tell what is inside them etc...

I would like to make a comment...As a beginner, there is so much to learn about aquaponics and it can be very over whelming. I'm sure that this has stopped a lot of people from starting a system. There have been times when my plants did not look as well as my plants outside in my raised beds but as anybody who knows me.. I'm not a quitter. I knew my plants needed something added to perk them up but I was afraid to give them anything that might hurt my sons Goldfish. These are his babies that we care for together. He puts his hand in the tank and they know it's time to be fed and then with his other hand, he drops food in. He's only five so he has names for some of them...Well, to get back on track, I was shopping at the aquaponics store and I noticed that they have tea bags with minerals that you can purchase and put them in your media bed. My goodness, you can't get much easier than that. I talked to a gentleman Brent who was extremely helpful with my questions. One question I had was it says one tea bag is good for 100 Gallons but I've only got 150 Gallon tank wit 2 grow beds. Can I use 1 bag in each without hurting our fish. The answer was yes. I ordered 10 bags. I got the shipment faster than expected and I immediately used 1 bag in each grow bed. My water got cloudy for maybe a day or so and my last count was our fish are fine, maybe even abit friskier, and my plants are looking so much better. I want to thank everyone at the Aquaponics store  for being right on top of thins and selling a great product. Now I'm eyeing your 4x4 HID light. It may be an early Christmas at my house. Take care everyone on this sight.

If you are concerned with the nitrates, add more plants into you system.  Just don't go overboard.  The new plants will take up the nitrates without harming your system or starving the other plants.
