Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hey Natalie, I don't know of suppliers in Ontario, as I'm from out West, and know of Tilapia in B.C. and Alberta, not sure how the shipping would work. Have you talked with aquarium shops? Never Know!

If possible I would like to talk to the store owner  because I have heard of this before and I am trying to

track down what government department is saying this .

Your best bet is to contact the Canada food inspection agency (CFIA)

and ask them about bringing Tilapia in to Canada from the US. They will steer you in the right direction.

Ministry of Natural resources no longer handles Tilapia.

Hi Dino

Just got off the phone with cfia and now have to speak to more cfia people

first told that people could be using them to eat

then told about a disease that tilapia are not prone to

in the end I think that you will find that this is a form of protecting industry

Hi Darrin,

I'm looking for about 50.  As Jason has mentioned, it is almost impossible to find Tilapia.  I have found several commercial groups, but they want to sell in batches of 200,000, just a little too much for me :)

Thanks,

Jim.

Hi Jim,

I can relate to the difficulties finding Tilapia fry! It took me months and a cross border shopping trip to get some.

Shipping to Ontario from Chilliwack will be expensive. You might find somebody closer on this site.

How many fry are you looking for?

Darrin

Any chance you can send some to Ontario?  I've been looking for 6 months now and there are no fry or fingerlings out this way (although there are several farms).  Nothing for small scale.

Thanks,

Jim.

We ship tilapia fingerlings Canada wide to fish farmers and hobbyists.  We also are an authorized dealer of Martin Mills and have trout and koi feed available. www.noafisheries.ca

Fellow Canadian Aquapons,

A new place specializing in Tilapia fingerling Blue, Gold and Red esp for use in Aquaponics has just surfaced. They have great stock guaranteed to be free of hormones and are not inbred.

http://www.noafisheries.ca/

They are located in the Toronto Area. 416-546-6623

You can get trout feed in bulk from UFA but it is full of GMO  so i also am looking ??

Eric, I am from the Okanagan in Penticton BC. I have contacted or tried to contact the tilapia farm on the island and also the one in alberta. Have not heard anything back from them in over a week. Perhaps the larger farms don't sell small numbers to private individuals? Anyhoo.......

Has anything more cropped up in BC for a supply of tilapia or tilapia fingerlings? I can wait a few months as I am in the gathering materials phase of putting my system together.

I also contacted Noa Fisheries and althought their prices of tilapia are reasonable at 6 dollars each for the white niles the cost of shipping is like 130 dollars or more to fly them out to BC with Air Canada as the overnight delivery service from UPS is not available in my area of Penticton BC.

Eric would you part with a few fish if I was to drive over to you and pick them up?

Ian....

I'm just N. of Golden so if your ever up this way come & see my simple Aquaponics set up in my greenhouse brian@quantumleaps.ca

Yo Darrin, I'm in the Upper Columbia Valley, ( near Radium Hot Springs), and am aware of a local grower with a number of tanks, with tilapia

Lo Ian, I appreciate your offer to come over & pick up some tilapia, and I'd be glad to part with some, for free, even have a cabin for an over night stay, problem is, we're talking Nicaragua, which is where I've moved to.   I'll be in Penticton, likely early October, I've bought some pumps & things there previously, contact me by email at ericjf7@gmail.com if you wish, thanks Eric.  Have you tried any of the pet stores as a maybe?

Yes actually, the pet stores were my first folks contacted. The pet store was more than willing but upon asking their distributor they were told that tilapia were food fish and they only deal in pet fish! That was that.

Nicaragua huh? I love central america. Maybe I have to move to Nicaragua too just to get some darn tilapia! haha I hate to say it but looks like I am gonna have to eat the cost of shipping them here from Ontario. With my luck I will go ahead and do that and the next week find out my neighbour here breeds them and would have been happy to give me some for free lol.

Thanks
