That's great Barbara. Good to know!  I'm visiting with Sahib in Winter Park on March 3rd.  At some point, maybe this summer you'll grant me a visit to your place in Panama City!!

You ask how deep the grow bed is, Bromeliads have a shallow root system, they don't need a grow bed this deep.  I have an 16ft X4ft above ground pool put in the ground 2 feet in a 35x50 foot green house, I used to have a nursery.  It was just sitting there growing weeds when I found aquaponics and decided to try it.  My neighbor had the pool in her yard growing algea and mosquitos so she gave it to me.  I used the resources I had to start.  I plan to run pipes outside the green house this summer and put plants in it using the water from the gravel bed.  My husband and I built a trough, we plan to put fresh water prawns in it this summer.  I grew Bok choy, letuce, brocali and kohl robi in it this winter.  They all grew well. We have been eating from it all winter.  I'll post more pictures.

Sometimes they take two years to mature and set fruit, sometimes longer.  They are bromeliads, sometimes they sucker at the bottom, make babbies around the bottom of the plant, you can break off the babbies and start new plants.  Mine are in the gravel bed surounded by many other plants.  They didn't get much direct sunlight this winter, they don't seem to mind the high temperatures of the green house in the summer months when I will have very few tall plants to shade them.  This, like many other's, is an experiment to see just what will grow in my system.  So far the list is growing.

This sounds interesting.  So your placing the top of the pineapple into the AP system (after it's dried out a bit).   How long til it fully matures?

The grow bed is about 15" deep and growing pineapple is easy.  When you buy one from the store cut off the top and pull off the bottom few rows of leaves.  Then let it sit on the counter for a few days, I have let them sit there for weeks and they are fine they sometimes start roots while on the counter.  Then plant it either in a grow bed or in  pot.  They need to be protected from freezing weather and take about two years to produce a pinnapple.  They can take direct sunlight or partial shade.  I have mine just put in with everything else.
