Has anybody tried bio char in their system.?Thinking of trying it as a buffer medium. Too reduce acidity and release carbon into the system. Anybody tried this, results??.Continue

Is there any benefit using gravel over, clay balls. Will the plants leech minerals from the gravel.Continue

I use expanded shale (hadite) in my beds. There is a place about 20 minutes from where I live that makes the stuff (no middle man). My grow beds are 16 cubic feet (4'X4'X1') and it cost me about $35 to fill one, using my truck to haul it. (Its sold by weight. 600-700 lbs to fill 16 cubic feet.) I use what is called "C" size which is smaller than what you probably see being used as mulch around houses. I don't know if the "C" size is a universal description or not.
I went with the shale product because its was cheaper and easy for me to get..
My system has been up for about 2 months.
My plants are doing well in it. (See pictures.) The second picture has what might be considered a hole in it, however, we have harvested some pak choi and the replacements are just coming up. Also, you may notice a peat pot. I'm starting a tomato plant in which I plan to use a "grow bag" in my second bed which is just being finished.
