I am using crushed broken pieces of a terracotta flower pot for my grow bed media will this work? I built a 10 gallon fish tank set up to teach my daughter about aquaponics for her 7th grade science project. If anyone wishes to donate any materials to me and aid me with the proper guidance to teach her correctly I would be most thankful to you. Eric S

Hi Eric.  First, I recommend that you read the "How to Use This Site” link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Main page.  It will tell you what you need to know to navigate in here, and even includes a video walk-through.

The best way to post questions is to start a Forum topic.  Go to the Forum tab above, click on the +Add in the upper right corner, give it a title, select a topic category and type in your questions.  You may also want to browse through what is already in there.  A huge wealth of info on aquaponics has been built up over the past year!

You could use 3/4" gravel - make sure there is no limestone in it - expanded clay aggregate (AKA LECA, or brand name Hydroton) or expanded shale.

Eric, I think you will find lots of help in here for your daughter's project!  Read through the Rules of Thumb, comb through the forums, and then post your questions for the group.  With regard to broken terracotta pots, I"m afraid that the edges might too sharp for plant roots.
