For over 4.5 years I have been studying and learning Aquaponics. I have recently been certified as a commercial, small farm, and home Aquaponics designer. In January of 2018 I will leave for the Philippines to live a while. It s my desire at that time to be able to help friends and family grow healthy food for their needs.

Hi Richard
Lovely to hear from you!
Ha it's a meandering story of how I ended up doing aquaponics.
A marine biologist comes to Beijing to do Microbiology and after two years of white walls, disposable plastics and killing bacteria decides on a change of career. Luckily before leaving Chinese Academy of Sciences there's the opportunity to help organise a scientific conference, and after the thrilling high and lows of doing that I went into event organising.
So I've been running DIY aquaponics workshops for the last three summers along side other events projects that have been going on. They are very much low tech and aimed at people who live in highrise apartments. They are super simple with the aim of inspiring a 'can do' attitude. There's also a aqp community group on wechat where people share their experiences and pics and give advice. There has been a few medium sized sytems set up of the last couple of years on the roofs of hutongs but everyone who I know has done that has now left- such is the transitory nature of Beijing.
I've been to see a new set up in Hong Kong (Green Republic) and am in touch with one in Shangdong Province (Aone), hopefully get a visit in before coming back. Also hydroponics in container units (Alesca Life) are getting press.  I've also been to a big one in the Manila, Philippines. Very different vibe as it was not for commercial purposes instead for training and feeding 1000 orphans. There's a couple who are running Aquaponics 101 workshops in Manila or arranged the trip and accompanied me there. I can put you in touch if you like. Seems not having the demand of producing a certain amount for a deadline make things MUCH more chilled out!

I'll actually be back in the UK at the end of December but hopefully visit regularly as my husband's job is still based in Beijing.
What have you been up to in the UK?
Liz
