Monster Fishkeepers, another group I belong to is under a cease and desist order from the Monster Energy Company, makers of those nasty energy drinks, because of their name.  This is utterly stupid…Continue

I am a horticulturist, ex petroleum engineer and geologist, and general science/tech geek. My system is not truly an aquaponic system. It's basically a Koi pond in my greenhouse with a large wet/dry type trickle bed filter, which has plants growing in it. I cool weather I grow water cress in it, and in warm weather, the only edible things are Taros. Year round there are Cyperus Umbrella plants, syngoniums, Ancornus, and several types of tradescantias, or wandering jew relatives. I mostly feed my Koi Guinea pig food and some seafood cat food, and about every 5th feeding I give them real Koi or goldfish food. I also have a 20 gal hex aquarium perched over one corner of the pond with large fancy goldfish, really a lot of them for a 20 gallon tank, but the aquarium has both it;s own reverse flow under gravel filter and it has about 20 gallons per hour(one turnover) of pond water circulating through it, and out, via a constant level weir siphon system. Both the aquarium and the pond have expanded shale used as the substrate, and expanded shale is also part of the wet-dry trickle filter. The drainage from this filter partially goes into a 2 inch perforated pipe that pushes this highly oxygenated water deep into the bottom of the pond substrate. The filtration system has about a one hour turn-over of the whole pond(350 gal/hr) when the pump and intake skimmer are all cleaned out and running at top efficiency.
