Well...we lost most our fish and cleaned out are system and found the problem....oil from sump pump!!....now we have put everything back together (oil free pump) and have a disagreement on how far below the water level should be from the top of the media beds. We had it too high before and it was creating algae. I think .25" - .50 " and my husband says 1"- 2"...I tossed my argula, basil and salad seeds and spread the rocks around like I did in our previous system but very little is coming up.…See More

"I would be careful about using chlorine in the system.  I'm afraid the residue might hurt the fish and prevent your bacteria from growing.  I would clean it with a solution of H2O2 instead.  The solution breaks down into harmless…"

"I would try cycling it again. You can leave the plants in, and maybe add some sea kelp or other natural fish-safe nutrient to keep your plants alive.  I would try some AquaCycle, and follow the cycling instructions."

"What kind of fish do you have?  Is your water temp right for them? What is your water source? Are you filtering it? I would try to slowly lower the pH to the low 7's. My best guess is the addition of water after you flooded the sump messed…"

We are literally just starting....this project has taken forever to get off the ground. I thought we would be growing last July. My husband built a passive solar greenhouse and designed and built everything so no comes the scary part....we actually have to keep fish alive and grow plants. Suddenly very intimidated!!
