Media Beds increase oxygen demand?!

Someone told me this the other day (not from a forum but from an email) and it doesn't sound accurate to me:[media beds] are great for nitrification, but bad as clarifiers.  Generically they become…Continue

Media beds - before or after DWC in a hybrid system?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Adam Dusen Aug 1, 2014. 2 Replies

Hi everyone,I am currently looking into modifying my large DWC system to include media beds. My hope is that these media beds can accomplish 100% of my biofiltration and mechanical filtration…Continue

Derek replied to Adam Dusen's discussion What to do with Used Rockwool?
"Rockwool is made by melting a combination of rock and sand and then spinning the mixture to make fibers which are formed into different shapes and sizes. The process is very similar to making cotton candy. While versatility and ease have contributed…"

Jim Fisk replied to Adam Dusen's discussion Media Beds increase oxygen demand?!
"If this is really a concern perhaps you should look into ozonation. Used in everything from sewage treatment plants (for exactly the same reasons as AP) to swimming pools these days. The extra oxygen molecules boost oxygen in the system as they go…"

Carl B replied to Adam Dusen's discussion Media Beds increase oxygen demand?!
"Sounds more like an aquaculture problem.  In high fish density, oxygen needs to be artificially supplied to the system, and anything other than a fish that uses oxygen would be a waste.  In aquaponics, where functioning bacteria are a key…"

"Perhaps not in an immediate sense but aren't you removing nutrients which would have been available later, after being dissolved?  I don't understand why you think it better to remove solids instead of increasing oxygen  On the…"

"I fully understand that decomposition of organic matter uses up oxygen... That''s a no-brainer. But wouldn't that oxygen be coming from the abundant atmospheric oxygen during a drain cycle? And not as much the DO in the water during a…"

""Many factors affect the dissolved oxygen concentration in pond water. It’s not just the fish load in your pond. Atmospheric temperatures as well as weather conditions affect dissolved oxygen. Fish waste and decaying organic matter have a…"

Media Beds increase oxygen demand?!

Someone told me this the other day (not from a forum but from an email) and it doesn't sound accurate to me:[media beds] are great for nitrification, but bad as clarifiers.  Generically they become clogged and need frequent mixing, and/or backwashing.  Fixed or movable media beds used as clarifiers also increase the Oxygen demand of the system, as many of the solids wind up being digested in the system consuming oxygen.  In general as much as 80% of the oxygen demand goes towards solids…See More

"Adam, your clear water sump is in my 3 yrs at this by far the best way to go. Among other things the pump will last far longer when it is not pumping solids. It sounds like you could make a few changes to help the system flow better. I raise trout…"

Commercial Hybrid DWC Rafts

"Rob, in your estimation, what do you think the minimum ratio (in terms of surface area) for rafts to media would be in order to achieve good filtration of solids and good biofiltration? (It looks like you have about a 2:1?) I ask because where I am…"
