it has to be pumped back up into it, from another pump. this is simply a way to have an outlet for water flow to your system from a top or higher tank. enables water flow without holes drilled in sides or bottom. i guess the word pump in this is misleading. I live in a trailer park, and the electricity goes out rather frequently. everything i build must be able to shut down and restart on it's own. this does that well and has since november '14. it has sat idle for as long as 4 days till power was restored. when the pump starts up again this works as soon as the water level in the supply tank rises again, and the supply tank never drains lower than the height of the outlet on this device.

I made these in my photo program to better show how the Water bridge overflow siphon pump works. i hope people like it. and build their own to use instead of drilling a hole in fish tanks etc. the cans in this also work as a mini swirl filter.

I have a few DIY gadgets in My system I would like to share/showoff :) and the idea came to Me to start this group here for others to share theirs as well. 

              The Group image i selected for a reason, it is the DIY water bridge siphon pump I came up with. (after some searching I found I am not the inventor, although i thought i was when i made this with 2 clear soda bottles and tubes.) I am excited to share the results when i made it "correctly" meaning how I would make now that it is past the science experiment stage. This ran for a month in the soda bottle/tube stage very successfully.

            The DIY water bridge siphon pump, prevents having to drill a hole in your fish tank. this is simply a 1" pipe in a "U" shape assembly, with some water added to the canister as a prime, remove the air from the pipe. this creates a simple siphon, and will equalize to the water level of the tank and canister. I drilled some small holes at the top rim to use 2 u shaped hooks to hang on side of tank. I made these with heavy coat hanger wire. when making the hanger align the bottom of the hole in side of canister to your desired water level of your tank. on the square side of the coffee can i drilled a hole for the outlet. threaded fitting to 1" pvc with pipe slip rubber washers on both sides, coating the inside with silicone as a sealant, I threaded a electrical conduit nut on the inside and tightened it down with wrenches about 1/4 turn past hand tight.  do NOT glue the rest of the pieces i feed 4 grow trays with "t's" and a 90 elbow on the last one. Adjust the flow rates of each GB by adjusting the angle of the "T" slightly giving more or less flow from each one, till they are all equal. 

            This assembly can be used for connecting 2 sump tanks or any tanks really that you don't want to drill holes in the sides of them, but still connect them together. Breeder tanks etc. I use this as a overflow "safety valve as well. It keeps my larger tank from overflowing. I direct the outlet to my Koi pond below the tank. 

          The idea came from watching DIY tubes and I learned how to make a water bridge in it. it is simply large pipe that has fittings that make it connect 2 tanks or more, like a large U shape upside down. then use a diaphram pump to remove the air from the pipe. creating a siphon effect, the same method is used for a upside down fish tank above the waterline   a water bridge can be quite entertaining really. if you put a 90 elbow on both ends in the 2 tanks it connects, in the morning you may find fish that have decided to "explore the cave" and found themselves in another tank in the morning. The video i saw the gentleman used 3" clear Pipe across his living room. but alas ! he can never see the fish use it. they only pass through at night or when the room has no activity, but they do use it to go from 1 tank to the other. How cool is that?. I am hoping by adding 1 90 in the tank with the rosies, they will feed them selves to my 19 year old cichilid,!
