ah i see, how big do they usually get?

do you have a certain ratio of male to female?

Why use the shrimp as feed? just curious

I would like to grow shrimp that are big enough for my own consumption. Once I get a larger tank I will have to look into the giant prawns.

Now if you are not talking about shrimp big enough to be worth eating by people. There are plenty of aquarium varieties of shrimp. Like cherry shrimp or ghost shrimp. I currently have some red cherry shrimp in my small aquarium indoors. I'm hoping to grow out a population so I can move some out to my raft bed and grow them as food for catfish and bluegill. But for now they are just inhabiting the aquarium since there are so few of them at the moment.

I was thinking tiger or red cherries.

I couldn't find anything on raising shrimp in RI. It seems as though most of the permits for commercially farming shrimp are in the southern states.

I did notice that people talking of shrimp in their system receiving minimum orders of 1000. I may wait until I have more tank space to work with.

What kind of shrimp?

The Giant Prawns, well you probably can't grow out more than one in a 5 gallon space since they are territorial.

If it is the Prawns then the only place I know to get them is Miami Aquaculture. I think their minimum order is probably 1000 and if your state requires a permit or certification to raise them you will need to share a copy of that with the supplier.

Just a note, the minimum order with most suppliers is more about the minimum price. If you are willing to pay that price for a smaller number of animals, they may still sell them, you just wind up paying a heck of a lot more per animal.
